CSing

CSing, farming, last hitting: all terms for a very crucial skill in league. As you’ve probably figured out by now, when you are the killer of a minion you get gold for it. Increasing the amount of minions you kill per game will get you more gold, which means you get more items, which means you get more fed (yay!). First off let’s take a look at some numbers:

  • Approx. 15 CS = 1 Kill
  • The maximum CS at 5 minutes is roughly 38
  • The first wave of minions spawn at 1:30 and spawn every 30 seconds after that
  • Siege/Cannon [the big] minions grant 40 base gold + 1 gold every 90 seconds
  • Caster minions [back line of minions] grant 15 base gold + .5 gold every 90 seconds
  • Melee minions [front line of minions] grant 20 base gold + .5 gold every 90 seconds
  • A siege minion spawns every 3rd wave, in the middle of the wave; meaning every 3rd wave has 7 instead of 6 creeps. The first wave of minions with a siege minion spawns at 2:30.
  • The first wave will fully reach mid lane ~1:55 and side lanes at approx. 2:03-2:05

Alright you know all this stuff but now what to do with it? Here’s some tips and tricks on how to get better CS every game:

Please keep in mind these aren’t magical fixes. You WILL have to practice for probably some time if you really want to improve. You are allowed to do these practices using spells; just try to keep them minimal.

HOW TO PRACTICE:

STEP 1:
What you’re trying to achieve: 95% of max CS
What you’ll need:

  • Custom game, no lane opponents
  • Full runes and masteries

The point: Farming with no pressure and no one around you teaches you to still be attentive even when farming alone. The enemy team should fear giving you any chance to farm by yourself.

STEP 2:
What you’re trying to achieve: 95% of max CS
What you’ll need:

  • Custom game, no lane opponents
  • full runes and masteries

What to build on from last test:

  • Stay out of AA range before each last hit, only go when you know you will get the very last hit on the CS

The point: This exercise will increase your natural mechanics by increasing mobility and therefore allow you to play safer in lane.

As an added bonus… Try cancelling the second half of your auto attack. You can do this on ranged champions by clicking away after your projectile leaves and on melee champions by clicking away after the damage is applied. Be careful of early cancelling on ranged champions. If your projectile fires but it does no damage it means you canceled too early.

STEP 3:
What you’re trying to achieve: 95% of max CS
What you’ll need:

  • Custom game, no lane opponents
  • full runes and masteries

What to build on from the last test:

  • Move between each CS and alternate on each wave between auto attacking as much and as little as possible

The point: This will teach you the difference between pushing (AAing as much as possible) and freezing (AAing as little as possible) your lane. Being able to do both will help your decision making in lane.

STEP 4:
What you’re trying to achieve: 95% of CS while handling harass
What you’ll need:

  • Custom bot game, 1 lane opponent(ensure this by adding 3 bots to the game)
  • full runes and masteries

What to build on from the last test:

  • In addition to step 3 you should be harassing the bot and managing the amount of harass you take
  • Your goal is NOT to kill the bot

The point: This is an introductory step on learning how to focus on your wave while getting harassed. If you do not harass the bot at all it will eventually kill you.  Remember not to outright kill the bot because your first goal is to CS.

STEP 5:
What you’re trying to achieve: 95% of CS with additional harass
Do the same exact procedure as 4 except against 2 bots in lane.
Ensure this by adding 5 bots to your game.
**If you are a mid laner you will either have to settle for 1 bot or move lanes (sorry) 😦

STEP 6:
What you’re trying to achieve: 95% of CS with harass and no extra helpers
What you’ll need:

  • Custom bot game, 2 opponents in your lane
  • NO runes, NO masteries, NO items

What to build on from the last test:

  • You will need to focus more on the very fine line between 1 auto attack away and not.

The point: Learning the fine line between when your auto attack will and won’t kill could be the difference between getting a few extra cs and being just off and accidentally having your allied minions get the kill.

STEP 7:
What you’re trying to achieve: 95% of CS while controlling harass and awareness
What you’ll need:

  • Custom bot game, 2 opponents
  • NO runes/masteries/items

What to build on from the last test:

  • Try keeping up your map awareness. This is done by glancing around the map, the mini map every once in awhile.
  • You can also try pressing tab to check the score board
  • Check other lanes for HP and being MIA

The point: You’re trying to limit your tunnel vision while farming here. Having great CS is good and all, but your team needs you to pay attention to the actual game as well.

STEP 8:
What you’re trying to achieve: 95% of CS with minion death prediction, harass and map awareness.
What you’ll need:

  • Custom bot game, 2 lane opponents
  • No runes/masteries/items

What to build on from the last test:

  • Try to keep track of minion death and predict which will die next on both sides

The point: This will help you build awareness towards your enemy in lane and when you can get in safe harass. This is something that’s very good to get into the habit of.

STEP 9: (THIS IS IT FOLKS)
What you’re trying to achieve: 95% of CS controlling harass, maintaining map awareness and minion health
What you’ll need:

  • Custom bot game, 2 lane opponents
  • No runes/masteries/items

What to build on from the last test:

  • Try to change the minion’s heath with your auto attacks so that no two minions from opposing sides die at the same time
  • Try the opposite too; making two minions from opposing sides die at the same time

The point: This is to practice making opportunities to harass your opponent as well as protecting yourself from harass.
*The second part isn’t as practical as the first but more practice is always better 🙂

Alright phew. You made it through that! Take a breath while you read these tips and tricks about how to get good CS while under tower:

  • It takes 2 turret shots and 1 AA to kill a melee minion
  • It takes 1 AA, 1 turret shot then 1 more AA to kill a caster minion
  • Siege minions take 5 turret shots and 1 AA to kill under turret

Last minute notes:

  • Keep in mind the value of minions you’d rather have                     Siege->melee->caster
  • Minion armor is negligible. You can left click a minion and compare it to your AD to check if you will kill it
  •  If you want a good way to track the amount of CS you’ve gotten/total CS this is a worthy tool
  • If you don’t have a full rune page, don’t worry! You can still improve your CSing without runes. Just go through all the tasks assuming you have no runes on.

Note: the “how to practice” tasks/steps referenced in this guide can originally be found by Elyndar on reddit here. This is my rendition of that guide, in an attempt to make it more readable and less wall-of-text-like.
